The Factory

Thursday, 16 May 2019 14:38

Candice McKay’s 2019 collection is a colourful and nostalgic exploration of the 1970s. Inspired by old family photographs, they show a simpler time when society felt less jaded and the world could be changed by people.

A celebration of youth and a freedom from society’s norms, The Factory takes its name from Andy Warhol’s ‘Factory’, a gathering place for intellectuals, play-writes, Bohemians, rock stars and freethinkers. In its 70’s heyday, The Factory was frequented by these and other muses such as Edie Sedgwick, ‪Mick Jagger and ‪Debbie Harry; many of whom were photographed by iconic photographer Nat Finkelstein and Finkelstein’s images, heavily influenced Candice’s collection.

While the hair and styles may celebrate an era that’s passed, it was important to Candice that the colour palette was not the faded tones of the photographs that spurred the collection. Instead she brought the images to life using colours inspired by the Kodak colour film –new at the time– as a celebration of the original 1970’s colour.
