Eye for Design in Edinburgh

Friday, 11 October 2019 09:54

Charlie Miller's Edinburgh’s West End salon in the Scottish capital has undergone a 5-star refit, providing staff and clients the experience of an innovative and creative salon environment.

For 54 years the award-winning Charlie Miller brand has been focussing on providing modern hairdressing and superior client services amid its salons’ ambient and luxurious surroundings. This year, some 18 years after its last refit, MDs Jason and Joshua Miller employed the services of one of Scotland’s leading interior designers, Ian Smith Design & Architecture to modernise its Stafford Street Georgian townhouse salon. Taking 5 weeks from start to finish this eye-catching and chic salon design with its clean, modern design features has hit the mark with clients and hairdressers.

Flooring and Walling

Large porcelain tiles that, in appearance, resemble natural pale polished concrete fill the floor and walls. Chosen for their modern look and size, they have a non-absorbent surface and are low maintenance. Free Wi-Fi and Silestone charging worktops for smart devices built into every station exude convenience and luxury for clients in a high-tech world.

Mirror Design, Reception Desk & Stairs

Designed by Ian Smith Design, the bespoke mirrors sit off the walls allowing for a discreet LED light strip to be placed behind the mirror to create a warm halo of light surround. A brass edge, burnished to create a dull gold finish, completes the customised design that adds a creative trim to the edge and protects the mirror. The brass finish is also incorporated on the reception desk and the balustrade to the stair.

Seating & Lighting

The salon is fitted out with Takara Belmont Adria II hydraulic styling chairs. A timeless, modernist chair that includes a 360º rotation, padded chrome arms and chrome footrests ensures complete client comfort. A recessed downlight is plastered in for the architectural lighting with LED strip lighting around the dropped ceiling creating a balanced distribution of light. The stunning feature chandelier lights made for Ian Smith Design are a Mid Century Sputnik Design in antique brass with a mixture of brass and opaque glass globes.

Reception

The soft furnishing of the reception area offers lounge comfort that encourages relaxation with its amethyst mohair-covered sofa and chairs, designed by and made for Ian Smith Design. The brass side tables from British design retailer, Julian Chichester, are solid raw brass.

Backwash

Maletti’s ‘Modern’ wash units designed by Philippe Starck offer luxury and high-end comfort at the backwash and can be adjusted and tailored to the client’s personal preference.
