Craig Clark recently scooped Platinum in the Colour category at the Wella Professionals' International Trend Vision Award, held this year in Berlin. It was not only a personal triumph for Craig and HOB Salons where he works, but a massive achievement for UK hairdressing on such a prestigious international stage.

We interviewed Craig to find out more about him and to discover his views on what being an International Trend Vision Platinum Award winner means to him:

Craig, congratulations on your remarkable achievement. How old are you and how long have you wanted to become a hairdresser?

I always had an interest in hairdressing as my mum being a hairdresser but I was a late starter at 21 and now have just over 16 years under my belt, so you can guess my age from that.

Do you have a mentor? How does he inspire you and help nurture your creativity?

I wouldn't say I had one person in particular but I am lucky to have two people I work closely creatively with and we bounce our ideas off each other and that is where we come out with our best inspiration that works.

What were the specific concepts behind your winning look?

My concept behind my winning look was the stone, blue lace. I was inspired by the colour of this crystal and how the tone moved with fluidity throughout, reflecting shimmering textures and a glassy seamless surface.

What was your inspiration for the colours and for the total look?

My colour pallet was inspired by this rock formation and wanting to give a natural organic approach that tied in with the trend and current colour. I decided to use the new mineral collection from the Wella innocence range with was able to give me the perfect tone and finish I desired.

Why and when did you decide to start participating in the International Trend Vision Award?

I decided at the beginning of the year I wanted to enter ITV, the reason for this was to create a profile for myself within the industry as well as obtain a greater skill set and grow my creativity. It has been such an amazing journey and has helped me gain everything I wanted and I’m looking forward to what is ahead.

Do you intend to continue participating in the International Trend Vision Award or other competitions?

At the moment I think I am taking a little rest on the competition front as I want to enjoy the next year as an the International Trend Vision Award Platinum winner and take in all it has to offer, if I concentrated on another competition as well I feel I would miss out on all that winning the International Trend Vision Award will bring me in the year ahead.

What new opportunities do you think winning the International Trend Vision Award will offer you?

I am not sure and still probably don't  realise how big this is, so I will have to see what will come along. I am definitely excited to see what the next year has to bring.

What advice would you give to other young people who want to make a career in hairdressing?

I would tell anyone thinking of hairdressing as a career should totally go for it. I think it is one of the most creative and rewarding jobs and even though it is hard work if you push the boundaries there is so much you can achieve…how good is it to do a job where you make someone look and feel great with your creativity and skill.

What advice would you give to other young people who want to compete in the the International Trend Vision Award?

Go for it... I know I did, it is such a rewarding journey and the experience unreal, you can only grow from this experience, you have nothing to lose!
