INFRINGE: An Anthropology of Hair

Thursday, 25 May 2017 13:58

Anthony & Pat Mascolo are known for pushing creative boundaries. With the launch of INFRINGE they have ‘trespassed’ beyond pure hair into a world where hair meets art and art meets hair.

Anthony Mascolo has long been at the forefront of avant-garde and artistic hairdressing, winning many accolades and head-lining numerous hairdressing shows across the globe. He has taken hairdressing to the limit and become an icon along the way.

A few years ago he purchased a Victorian library in Battersea, South London and went about converting the grade 2 listed building into a fascinating space that’s become an archive for much of his work, with curated models from some of his major shows, as well as an area to use as a photographic studio and location for events. He and wife Pat, continually work on joint innovative projects and once The Library Space, (as it is called), was finished, they needed a new venture to drive their creativity forwards. Their original plan was to do lots of photographic shoots to produce new artistic work with their own close team, formulated into an online magazine. But it didn’t take long for Anthony and Pat to realise it would be more inspiring to include the work of other people equally passionate about the subject of hair.

Over the last 2 years Anthony has built a small internal team of photographers, film-makers, graphic designers, writers and editors who have researched, interviewed and created content for online publicaton www.infringe.com  The resulting content is unique, going far beyond the boundaries of hairdressing for which Anthony is renowned. When it came to absolute image inspiration however, Anthony felt the need for a tangible magazine and so, with his small team, he and Pat are launching the first issue of INFRINGE – a thick ‘tome’ of unique content. INFRINGE is primarily devoted to people with a love of the medium of hair, not just the hairdresser, barber and wigmaker, but photographers, artists and cultural collaborators. It’s for anyone and everyone who thinks about challenging the usual perceptions of hair and its role in shaping an individual’s sense of identity.

In the UK INFRINGE will be on sale in selected branches of W.H. Smith from 8th June and from art and culture shops around the country. It will also be on sale in France, in Colette, Paris and in a number of outlets around the globe. Importantly, INFRINGE can be purchased onlineCLICK HERE - where there will be a list of global stockists.
