Wednesday, 15 May 2013 15:50

Hairdressing entrepreneur giant and industry frontman for 50 years - Toni Mascolo OBE (CEO & Founder of TONI&GUY)  has been appointed as an  Honorary Professor at Durham University Business School: only the third entrepreneur ever to receive this accolade.

To receive the honour, Toni Mascolo attended Durham University to deliver a speech as part of the Business School’s Durham Speaker Series, where attendees include the University Business School students, alumni and corporate partners. Tony spoke about his career and building a global business that is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. The presentation also provided an overview of Toni Mascolo’s development of TONI&GUY’s franchise model, which significantly transformed the world of hairdressing in the UK and worldwide.

The content of the presentation covered areas including his career starting from opening the first TONI&GUY salon with his brother in South London 1963 to present day; outlined how he set out to redefine the educational structure of hairdressing by creating a unique academy system that became the backbone of TONI&GUY; and how the success of TONI&GUY elevated hairdressing to a profession and empowered thousands of employees.

In addition, the speech also provides an overview of the of the work TONI&GUY has undertaken with the Durham University Business School, notably a major service quality and customer satisfaction research project with Professor Tom Redman and Dr Les Graham. The research was targeted to draw a vast amount of data from across TONI&GUY’s UK business, was developed to both increase understanding of the company’s full service chain, from frontline service worker to regional manager and also to support TONI&GUY in understanding and improving customer relation.

Mr Mascolo commented, “My story, and the story of TONI&GUY, is ultimately about giving people the tools to succeed. Fifty years ago, I set out to build a franchise that combined high standards and creativity with individual empowerment. I would say to new managers, ‘Your success is our success, we give you the tools but you make our business great.’ It is a pleasure to be speaking at a School which shares these values, and which shows true commitment to providing the skills to excel.

Professor Rob Dixon (Dean of Durham University Business School) said, “Toni Mascolo’s passion for the betterment of his business and its staff is infectious, and his story exemplifies the entrepreneurial spirit, tenacity and vision that we seek to impress upon our students. We are very grateful for him sharing his time and insight with us. The research we are conducting with TONI&GUY is a superb example of the mutual benefit that’s derived when the worlds of business and academia work closely together.
