Karine Jackson's London Salon First to Receive Sustainable Salon Certification

Wednesday, 31 January 2018 16:05

Current President of the Fellowship for British Hairdressing, Karine Jackson, has been named London’s first certified Sustainable Salon thanks to an eco-initiative by the University of Southampton to help hair businesses reduce their carbon footprint.

Researchers there found that hair care can be hugely energy intensive – someone who washes every day, rinses, repeats and blow dries uses 500kg of carbon dioxide a year whereas simply reducing to washing hair every other day and rinsing once sees the carbon footprint go down by 2000% to 25kg of carbon dioxide. Being more eco conscious in salon not only has a huge effect on the planet but on bills, so hairdressers are in the perfect position to both reduce their own carbon footprint and that of the wider public.

Karine has long been an advocate of organic colouring and hairdressing and her west end salon, which offers vegan hair services, is the go-to venue for ethical values without compromising on performance or trend. Karine is supporting this new campaign to encourage other salons to become sustainable, and to save thousands of pounds while helping the environment as well as creating a valuable marketing tool…

Project leader Dr Denise Baden presented Karine with her certificate watched by Errol Douglas, Carolyn Newman and a host of other salon teams who were then treated to demonstrations and tips that are good for hair, save time, money and energy and are great for the planet too. Eco technologies on show included the scirocco smooth which sucks water from the hair removing the need for washing towels which saves lot of water, energy and money, and Curlformers which create long lasting, heat-free curls with no damage.

The sustainable salon certificate is awarded to salons whose staff have completed the free virtual salon online training programme designed by the Ecohair team at the University of Southampton in association with VTCT and Habia, which teaches stylists about key sustainability concepts, technologies and practices.
