The Fellowship on Apprentices

Tuesday, 10 April 2018 14:21

The Fellowship’s ethos is all about sharing, collaborating and supporting each other in the industry. It’s important to talk about the issues that we, and the industry, face so that we can work together and make positive changes.

The Fellowship have been exploring a subject that everybody’s talking about – keeping apprentices engaged. They asked their Instagram following for advice, views and tips on the issue, in the hope that it will help inspire salons and their apprentices around the country…

What can we do to keep apprentices and juniors engaged in their salon role? There are many easy ways to enhance their time in the salon and keep things exciting for them. Darrel Hall from Hair Studio by Darrel says, “I take my apprentices to all of the courses that I attend; whether that’s colour, cutting or something else. It improves their knowledge and builds their confidence in the salon’s investment in them. I once took an apprentice to Salon International as one of my stage models to give her an idea of where hairdressing can take you and to give her the chance to experience being on stage.”

Try and think outside the box by encouraging apprentices to look beyond the salon for their knowledge, inspiration and development.

“I have a list of inspirational stylists, fashion houses and designers for my apprentices to follow on social media, bringing the creative world into their daily life, even when they aren’t in the salon,” explains Vas Mikellides from Sinead Kelly London, “This helps them to start viewing hairdressing as the bigger picture. It’s important that hairdressers know about the high-fashion world and how to translate that into salon-friendly looks.”

Apprentices are the next generation, and as much as an investment for your future as the salon is to theirs. Set mini projects, inspire them and treat them as an asset to your business. You must give to receive!
