ClubStar Art Team Members Share Success Stories

Thursday, 02 August 2018 14:16

Two former members of the ClubStar Art Team shared their journey so far as special guests at the recent ClubStar Art Team Presents event.

Ellie Bond and Michael Rackett are both former members of the ClubStar Art Team who have gone on to enjoy great success – and they recently took time out of their busy schedules to return to where they’d begun and share their journeys.

Taking to the stage at the recent ClubStar Art Team Presents evening, Ellie and Michael were interviewed by current team mentor, Simon Tuckwell. ClubStar is the youth branch of the Fellowship for British Hairdressing, open to hairdressers aged 16-25. The Art Team is by application only, with eight places available to promising emerging talent.

Ellie, from Spargo Hairdressing in Essex, was first on stage for the evening and revealed that she had put off applying for the Art Team until the very last year she was able to apply. “I was desperate to be a part of it,” she explained, “but just didn’t have the confidence to try out, as I didn’t think I was good enough.” In her final possible year she applied – and made it. “I got so involved in ClubStar during my year on the Art Team,” she reveals. “We did so much presentation work and practising our techniques, all of which helped my confidence. Presenting at Salon International was the ultimate for my self-esteem and made me feel that I was good enough to try out for the F.A.M.E. Team.”

She applied, and made it – and has since gone on to travel to Australia with BaBylisss Pro, shoot with Rankin, present on stage outside of the Fellowship and build up a sizeable body of impressive work.

“Being part of ClubStar opened my eyes,” she said. “I enjoyed new experiences, met new people and found others that shared my passion. Learning from industry leaders was incredible – it was transformative.”

Her one tip for success? “Just go for it. I didn’t for years because I didn’t believe I was good enough, but it was the best thing I ever did.”

Michael Rackett from RUSH Hair was on the ClubStar Art Team in 2015, and agreed with Ellie that his time on the team had drastically enhanced his confidence. “I grew as an individual and progressed my career both within the salon and in the industry as a whole,” he said. “If you’re part of a big salon group like I am, something like this can be transformative.”

Since being on the team, Michael has been a finalist for Newcomer of the Year twice and Southern Hairdresser of the Year at the British Hairdressing Awards, as well as joining the L’Oreal ID Artists. “Entering something like ClubStar boosts your self-esteem so much, that you start to feel much more confident in what you’re doing – now I’ve gone full circle and I’m an educator in my company, training other people who are where I was five years ago; it’s fantastic.”

Michael’s key team for potential ClubStar Art Team members is to, “be yourself. It’s so important to do what you like when you’re auditioning, not what you think you’re supposed to be doing to impress someone. Be comfortable with being yourself, and you’ll create work that really stands out.”

Applications for this year’s ClubStar Art Team are now open to any member of ClubStar. The deadline for entries is Friday 17 August – click here to fill out your application form!
