ITVA Interview: Silver Color Artist of the Year 2020, Heather Mackenzie

Tuesday, 31 March 2020 08:22

Further to the announcements of the results of Wella Professionals' International TrendVision Awards, we are delighted to publish the first of three interviews with award winners from the United Kingdom and Ireland. First up, Silver Color Artist of the Year 2020, Heather Mackenzie .

Over the years Wella Professionals’ International TrendVision Awards have become one of the most coveted accolades in the hairdressing industry. Its winners often go on to become some of the most admired professionals in this craft. This year is no exception with six winners rising above thousands of entries to win a spot in the categories of International Color Artist and International Creative Artist, two of the most coveted ones amongst professional hairdressers.

“Recent world events have hit so close to home for our cherished professional community, which is all about closeness and human-to-human connection,” said Sylvie Moreau, President Coty Professional Beauty. “I’ve seen the sense of unity and strength amongst hairdressers during this difficult time and knew that celebrating these winners was not only a well-deserved recognition of their amazing talent, but a source of positive news for us all,” she continued. “Heather and the other winners represent the crème de la crème of stylists, having been selected from over 9,000 entries.”

In challenging times like these, displays of creative excellence are even more uplifting than ever. How does it feel to be an ITVA winner in such a special year as 2020?

With everything that’s going on, it’s so incredible and really motivated me, I feel so proud and overwhelmed. I never thought I was capable of this and for it to come now when we all feel a little strange it really has made me so happy.

The cancellation of the ITVA Creative Retreat in Seville has been a disappointment to everyone, what positive message of solidarity would you like to send out to the TrendVision family worldwide?

It’s sad we didn’t get to enjoy it, but I do think it’s going to make the September one so much more exciting and it’s giving us all something to look forward to. To be surrounded by such amazing artists is something money can’t buy.

Explain something of your journey from first entering the TVAs in your home-country to being declared an International winner.

I first entered thinking I wouldn’t even make it past the first round because I’d never entered before, I don’t work for a big salon group, and I was always told you need to be seen in these competitions a few times to get anywhere. So, to get this far is just incredible and I feel so honoured to be recognised on such a big platform along with incredible artists.

Please tell us something about the creative inspiration behind your ITVA winning image?

The inspiration behind my look was ethereal elegance, I went for a sort of old school glamour with a gothic twist. As clichéd as it sounds, I take inspiration from everything around me such as music and precious gemstones, they were a big one for this look. In the back of my head the whole way through this journey was the image of Stevie Nicks and I wanted to create a timeless, ethereal witchy vibe with a unique glamorous edge.

What do you love the most about Wella Professionals hair colour?

The variety, there’s something for everyone. Illumina Colour is my all-time favourite.

What is your specialty when it comes to hair?

I’d say creative colour, blondes and pastels

What is your favourite hair technique at the moment? Why?

I’ve recently been on an Air Touch Balayage class and I’m obsessed. You can achieve the most beautiful blends and get a beautiful even lift. I’m playing around with it at the minute and finding my own take on it.

How important is hair education for you? What seminar/course changed your career?

It’s everything, I’ve been on a few courses this year already, always looking online at what I can find to learn. I had a lot more lined up too so I can’t wait to get on them when we’re all back.

As a hairdresser, what is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

You don’t have to do everything. Focus on what you’re good at, what you’re passionate about and what drives you.

Looking to the future and a time when the world returns to normality, how do you see you career as a hairdresser/colourist evolving further as a result of being an ITVA winner?

I feel like this win has already elevated me so much just on social media alone. I’m excited to get back out there and push myself even further with the help of this win.
