Confirmed: Hair Salons in England to Reopen on 4th July

Tuesday, 23 June 2020 13:33
"Our national hibernation is coming to an end," were the words UK Prime Minister used to announce in Westminster today that Hair Salons and Barbers, along with hospitality venues such as pubs and restaurants, will be able to reopen on 4th July (by Gary Kelly).

"From the outset, we have trusted in the common sense and perseverance of the British People and their response has more than justified our faith," were Johnson's words as he addressed Parliament by focusing on the imminent need to rebuild the economy and reopen society. The announcement to reopen Hair Salons and Barbershops comes exactly 3 months to the day after lockdown restrictions forced them to close.

This announcement only applies to England at the current time, as Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have devolved administrations and will therefore make their own decision on this matter.

For our industry in the UK it has been a time of great frustration – just as it has for creative people in all aspects of society, whose desire to express their creativity is a strong driving force behind who they are as people and fundamental to their fulfilment as individuals. It goes without saying, therefore, that since the news broke at lunchtime today 23rd June, social media has been going wild with expressions of joy and delight that in less two weeks’ time, hair professionals in this country will be able to go back to doing what they love most.

KEEP YOUR DISTANCE?

Since the beginning of the UK lockdown on March 23rd there has been a 2-metre social distancing rule – twice the distance recommended by the World Health Organisation (WHO). That gave rise to much speculation as to how any business in hospitality or personal care could begin operating again, especially as, until today, the Government had flatly refused to remark on the possibility that the distance would be reduced in order to bring the country in line with the WHO directive. Therefore, it was with a huge sigh of relief that we also received the news that the social distancing rule is being reduced to 1-metre+ (+ signifying the adherence common-sense personal hygiene practise such as hand-washing and coughing into a tissue etc.)

PERSONAL PROTECTION IN SALONS

Over the past few weeks, as many other countries have reopened their hair salons, the announcement has coincided with very clear official guidelines and regulations about in-salon hygiene and the use of personal protection equipment. The information about what measures will be required in UK salons is still somewhat patchy. The daily Government CoVid-19 press briefing have hinted at a ‘common sense approach’ from businesses like hair salons that cannot implement social distancing rules, even at 1 metre. Other sources have suggested the need for more specific protective measures, such as Perspex screens, but for the moment we are, as is often the case with the current administration, in a “wait and see” situation.
