Back to Business: Kerry Mather, KJM Salons

Thursday, 09 July 2020 09:59

As salons across the country prepare to come out of lockdown and start to navigate the new normal, we spoke to a series of Fellowship for British Hairdressing figures to find out what they’re most looking forward to about getting back to business.

First up, it’s former Fellowship Vice Chairperson and owner of KJM Salons, Kerry Mather.

What are you most looking forward to about getting back to the salon?

Seeing all my clients again, with my scissors in hand, to make them look and feel fantastic again.

What’s the first thing you’re going to do when you’re back in the salon?

I’ve been in and out of the salon throughout lockdown for checks and product retail, but today I went in, whacked the music on full blast – a Club Classics playlist on Spotify – and danced around. I sent a video to the team of me dancing, too. It made me feel like the soul of the salon was back.

What’s one lesson from lockdown that you’re going to take back to the business?

That I can’t fit everyone in – not just post-lockdown when it’s busy, but in general. I’m always so busy and I make sure I can fit everyone in by going in early or staying late, but I’ve learnt I need to occasionally say no, and make more time for myself. One of my clients told me, “you think you’re some kind of Marvel superhero, but you’re human” and that stuck with me, so I’m trying to remember that.

What’s one piece of advice you’d give other salon owners anxious about going back?

Spend time talking to the team and find out how they’re happy working and what support is important to them. Really involve them, even more so than normal, because they are the ones who will be working in challenging new conditions. It will be different for everyone, so spend five minutes having a proper talk with each of them to ask what would help them right now.
