Colour: What's Really Trending this Summer?

Tuesday, 26 June 2018 10:09

During the Graduate Fashion Week 2018, Estetica's editorial team met up with Andrea Daley and Jason Hall. We took the opportunity to ask them what hair colours are really trending this season.

L’Oréal Professionnel continued in its support of Graduate Fashion Week for the fifteenth year running, taking up its place as official hair sponsor for the 2018 event at Truman Brewery, London from 3 - 6 June.

A hair team of 25 young L’Oréal Professionnel stylists was led by Andrea Daley from Barbara Liverpool Daley and Jason Hall from Jason Hall Hairdressing Edinburgh. They created the runway hair for the 24 college shows, attracting over 30,000 guests.

We asked Andrea and Jason what's trending on the colour front:

This summer we should see colour with a 90s twist. There was so much 90s influence hair on the catwalk, it was inevitable that colour trends would naturally follow suit. Look out for bleached out hairlines (think Geri Halliwell in her Spice Girls heyday but with a more expensive feel) see model Tia Jonsson for an updated take on the look. Dark chocolates, brunettes will get that gothy edge, cool tones à la Winona Ryder. Lastly, pinks and pastels will still be around but with more muted blush feel and “opal” colours which is a mixture of pastel tones,” Andrea Daley at Barbara Daley for L’Oréal Professionnel – Co Hair Director for Graduate Fashion Week 2018.

“Pastel colours are in, lots of violets, pinks and peaches. Clients are also embracing their own roots and leaving it more natural and softer at their root area,”  added Jason Hall at Jason Hall Hairdressing for L’Oréal Professionnel – Co Hair Director for Graduate Fashion Week 2018.

What's in and what's out?

“Expensive looking colour is in (maximum shine and gloss, highlights to the root and rich girl tones with a natural feel). And budget colour is out (forget your root stretches and balayage, crazy colour and faded tones) this summer is all about that high end feel.  L’Oréal Professionnel Mythic Oil is perfect for achieving that expensive looking hair that exudes health and vitality,” explained Andrea.

According to Jason: “Balayage is very on trend for this summer. Dark haired clients are wanting to break up the solid dark with caramel and softer ends and the blondes are more toned down and natural. The solid, grungy poor conditioned highlighted look is definitely OUT!”

The most requested in-salon colour?

“This might sound crazy but for the last couple of years now it’s been grey. For decades clients have tried to hide their silver roots and now we find that there is a big shift and clients are coming in actually requesting it. We have the fashion clients who want to make a statement with this cool, bold colour over a bleach and then there are the more mature clients who off the back of this new trend feel ready to embrace the natural and go back to their roots.  L’Oréal Professionnel Silver Shampoo in particular is great for maintaining naturally grey hair or for blondes that want that silver platinum blonde colour,”  said Andrea.

In Jason’s experience: “Balayage is definitely the most requested colour service. With the summer coming the clients are loving the Scandinavian blondes.”

Your top professional tip for achieving brilliant colour...

“Brilliant colour comes from keeping the hair in great condition, this should be priority if you want to achieve expensive looking hair," said Andrea. "Avoid over colouring the hair, use a bond reconstructor like L’Oréal Professionnel Smartbond to minimise damage and finally, don’t be embarrassed to recommend home care. If a client has spent a lot of money getting their colour just right, it's false economy to then buy a really cheap shampoo that will ruin all the hard work and skill you have put in,”

“Keep the colour soft and natural at the root areas, no harsh lines! No block solid colours; use natural toners,” added Jason.

Top client tip for maintaining colour between salon visits...

Andrea: My top tip is to listen to the advice of your stylist, sometimes adding the cost of home care to your bill can seem like a lot of money but if you love your colour or are on a journey to where you want to be with it, the right products can make or break your hair at home. Your stylist couldn’t achieve the finish they gave you without the right products or tools so expecting that you can do the same job without them is unrealistic. Finally, I always recommend clients with vibrant colours to cleanse their hair in tepid or cool water for at least the first few washes, this will allow the hair to normalise and prevent colour fade. Treat your hair like a red, silk blouse, you wouldn’t wash that in a high temperature and expect the colour not to run, so stay cool this summer!”

Jason: “Healthy, shiny, expensive looking hair is a must for all clients. Using the correct shampoo and conditioner especially for coloured hair is essential; L’Oréal Professionnel Serie Expert Vitamino Colour is a coloured hair hero range.  Also, a good heat protector, such as L’Oréal Professionnel tecni.art Constructor, is vital as over heat styling can make coloured hair loose its vibrancy and go dull.”
