Splash Kaleidoscope!

Hair colour using water pistols? Oh yes! Stylists Andrew and Kat Collett have found a fun and trendsetting way to apply colour!

Husband and wife team, Andrew and Kat Collett, are the owners of the With Love Salon in Kansas City, Missouri. They are the creative influence behind this intriguing trend that's going global. They use their Splash Kaleidoscope technique to recreate the fragmented effect of a kaleidoscope using water pistols.

The Technique

How does this technique work? Fill the toy guns with hair dye and water (adding water facilitates the spray application) and then spray the colour on the hair divided into sections. The result? Unique, original and, of course, multicoloured! We asked the two stylists Andrew and Kat Collet to tell us something more:

“We were trying to come up with some new idea just to have fun, but that we felt would create a textured and unique style,"  explain Andrew and Kat Collett. "This was our first collaboration together and so we wanted it to be very special and a good representation of our new salon With Love Salon. We pictured how the end goal was going to look and then we thought: 'Hey let's do it with water guns and have even more fun with it!' So we drove to the store and found the perfect ones!”

The Products

They used Colortrak colour bottles to mix the water with the Pulp Riot hair colour. This is where Andrew mastered the mixing ratio. He had a ratio 2/3 room temperature water to 1/3 of the Pulp Riot Semi-permanent colour. Then we would shake it up and use the bottle nose end to fill the water pistol

What to Expect

When ever dealing with any semi-permanent colours, the client should learn to embrace the fade. I would say this application only makes the colour fade just slightly faster, but not by much. If they can learn to embrace the fade of fashion colours they get a softer more pastel version of the colour and have an also new color every time they wash. In order to have the most longevity out of the fade, cold water is key! Also, one hundred and ten percent to use professional products, low heat styling and minimal sun exposure!

5 Top Tips to Achieve a Great Result!

1. Before fully filling your water gun based on the size of the stream the ratio may need to be tweaked therefore only fill a little bit In the gun and test that it will spray before completely filling the gun. (We learned this one by mistake numerous times)

2. Take thin slices of the hair and overlay it onto the Colortrak meche, taking the thinner section will ensure that all of the hair will get saturated.

3. To get full saturation on one of the sections apply a decent amount, overlay another meche and gently pancake Pat both of the meche together. This will allow the color to ooze together and fill a lot of the empty spaces.

4.  For cleaner sections and full saturation we started every process with a shadow root of the pulp riot semi permanent colour at full strength with a bowl and brush.

5. The laws of colour still apply. Careful which colours you choose to apply. Complimentary colours will neutralise each other slightly and give you a muddier affect. This is not wrong or right but just know that it happens if it is not your intended end goal.
