Trending Afro and Textured Hair Looks for AW19

Tuesday, 27 August 2019 10:38
(l-r): ROAR IF YOU WANT MORE!, ATTENTION TO DETAIL, HUES THAT GIRL.

James Earnshaw, Creative Manager, Bad Apple Hair, reveals his top three trends of Autumn/Winter 2019 for Afro and Texured hair.

ROAR IF YOU WANT MORE!

Embracing natural texture, and Afro hair in its beautiful, natural, wild state, is something we’ve seen for a while now – on the catwalk, on Instagram, and in real life. Rather than fighting the natural curl and texture of Afro hair, women are – finally – shunning damaging treatments and straightening processes in favour of showing off what they were naturally blessed with. Across Bad Apple Hair’s recent Jungle collection we’ve shown how curls can be left to look wild and untamed for a raw, sexy, unedited finish, or can be styled into more structured, big, luxurious-looking waves that are full of shine and moisture. The emphasis is on encouraging the natural texture and curl structure of the hair, regardless of the finish.

ATTENTION TO DETAIL

At Fashion Week AW19 – particularly at the New York shows – we saw Afro hair worn in short pixie cuts, but with hidden details that added interest. A pixie cut is a great way to wear Afro hair in a short style that’s manageable, however the cut can sometimes lack definition and shape. Adding a side parting, as we’ve done with this style from Bad Apple’s Remix collection, adds a focal point to the look that totally transforms this cut from very mediocre to very now. Adding small twists to a pixie crop in Afro hair is another interesting way to give a cropped cut definition and to update a short style for the new season. Colour is another great way; here we’ve updated the pixie cut with this season’s hottest hue, copper. Adding this on-trend shade is an instant seasonal upgrade and one that can add something extra to your Afro clients looking for that added detail this season.

HUES THAT GIRL

One interesting consequence of the current trend for embracing Afro curls, is that women are becoming more experimental with their colour: preserving the health of the hair by avoiding chemical treatments gives them a better foundation to get playful with colour instead. I recently gave singer and TV star Fleur East a stunning new blonde shade, inspired by Bad Apple’s Rise collection, lifting her natural tones with a warm golden base and the addition of soft buttery blonde through her ends. Pre-lightening is usually required when adding colour to Afro hair, so consider using a lightener with a bond enforcer already integrated inside, such as Schwarzkopf Professional Blondme, as this will help achieve maximum lift without compromising or altering the curl pattern. It’s also important to encourage your client to keep their Afro locks deeply moisturised, particularly following a colour treatment. Advise them to use a sulphate-free, moisture-rich shampoo, conditioner and treatment, and encourage them to stick to a good trim regime.
